Turtle Sands Nature Retreat opens at Mon Repos

26 Sep 2024

Tourists can now stay on the doorstep of one of Queensland’s most iconic wildlife experiences, as Turtle Sands Nature Retreat opens at Mon Repos Beach.

Mon Repos, located near Bundaberg, is home to the largest colony of nesting marine turtles on the eastern Australian mainland and provides a critical environment for the endangered loggerhead turtle.

NRMA Parks and Resorts received funding from the Queensland Government to support the redevelopment of the former holiday park and transform the facility into a year-round ecotourism attraction.

Guest accommodation includes 69 camping and caravanning sites, 16 new villas, 2 Bunkhouses, a Beach House and 9 glamping tents. The upgrades included site-wide improvements such as new amenities and a camp kitchen.

Each year between November and March, visitors can watch adult turtles nesting on Mon Repos beach, with hatchlings emerging from their eggs six to eight weeks later.

NRMA Parks and Resorts CEO Paul Davies said the resort will focus on sustainability and carefully manage the way guests interact with the environment.

“Turtle Sands is set to offer our guests and NRMA members an incredible experience celebrating and supporting the conservation of marine turtles in their natural environment,” Mr Davies said.

“Our commitment in bringing the Turtle Sands project to life is to offer our guests carefully considered, environmentally sustainable access to one of nature’s most amazing moments: turtles nesting and thriving at Mon Repos,” he said.

Turtle Sands is one of six projects across Queensland to share in $9.2 million funding from the Queensland Government’s Activate Ecotourism Infrastructure initiative.
