The Wondai Wolves kick goals with FairPlay

22 Jul 2024

The Wondai Proston Wolves Rugby League Club experienced a remarkable surge in new members after registering as a FairPlay activity provider. The club welcomed keen young players spanning from the Under 6 team, right through to A Grade, who used FairPlay vouchers to help cover their joining fees.

In 2023, FairPlay vouchers really changed the game for the club's Under 16 girls' team, enabling many of the players to join and play in the South Burnett Rugby League competition. The team was undefeated all season, culminating in a triumphant grand final victory on home turf.

Club Secretary, Women’s Coordinator and A Grade Coach, Brittany Holding, explained how FairPlay supported the Wondai Proston Wolves to enable participation from their local community by breaking down financial barriers.

“A massive percentage of our participation in all junior ages are only able to play because of the FairPlay vouchers,” Brittany said.

“Without FairPlay, we wouldn’t be able to field the teams that we do today.”

The impact of club membership extends beyond the field, fostering a sense of confidence and belonging among the Wondai Proston Wolves players.

“As a club, we try and get the girls not to just be here playing football, they also do a range of voluntary things around the club including helping with our disability program,” Brittany said.

“They’ve had a really great season which I think has also given them confidence off the field in their schooling, employment and voluntary roles at our events.”

Brittany recommends becoming a FairPlay Activity Provider to all clubs.

"By removing financial stress from parents and ensuring that club fees align with the voucher amount, the Wondai Proston Wolves have created an environment where every child can thrive, both athletically and personally.

“You just don’t want kids missing out on being able to join your club simply because they can’t afford your fees," she said.

“It just opens up a range of options for that child, not just in league, but in all sports."
