Murri Carnival continues to shine for up-and-coming Indigenous rugby league superstars

10 Oct 2024

The Queensland Government is excited to continue its support for the 2024 Queensland Murri Carnival, partnering with the Arthur Beetson Foundation and Health and Wellbeing Queensland to co-sponsor this iconic event.

The Queensland Murri Carnival, which has grown into one of the premier rugby league events for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, goes far beyond sport. It promotes the importance of health and education, requiring participants to meet school attendance and health check requirements. This unique focus makes the Carnival an important platform for young First Nations Queenslanders to not only showcase their sporting talent but also gain valuable life skills.

Set to be the largest Carnival yet, with 105 teams and 3,500 participants, the 2024 event will feature an additional day of competition and new divisions for girls, further expanding opportunities for all players.

“The Queensland Murri Carnival is more than just a sporting event—it’s a celebration of community and culture,” said Andrew Sly, Deputy Director-General, Sport and Recreation. “We’re proud to be supporting an event that creates pathways for Indigenous youth, and promotes healthy and active lifestyles.”

The Queensland Government’s continued sponsorship is part of its broader commitment to ensuring all Queenslanders have access to sport and recreation, particularly those in diverse communities. By removing barriers and encouraging participation, the Queensland Murri Carnival is playing a vital role in supporting the health and wellbeing of First Nations people across the state.
