Disability Action Week case study: Bay Islands Lifestyle

27 Nov 2024

The Queensland Government is proud to support Aqua Accessibility’s new initiative in accessible tourism, launched by Redlands Coast-based business Bay Islands Lifestyle.

This groundbreaking project ensures individuals of all abilities can enjoy water sports and explore the natural beauty of Moreton Bay Marine Park, further strengthening the Redlands Coast as a premier destination for accessible recreation.

Bay Islands Lifestyle has introduced an extensive range of fit-for-purpose equipment, including specially designed kayaks, seated paddle boards, quad bikes, water and beach wheelchairs, and beach access mats, making water-based activities accessible to everyone.

Karen Robertson, co-founder of Bay Islands Lifestyle, spoke passionately about the project’s goals at a recent council meeting.

"Our dream is to create human-powered moments in nature for every ability. Aqua Accessibility is about making sure everyone can enjoy the Redlands Coast and experience the joy of being on the water, regardless of their ability”, she said.

The Queensland Government is committed to supporting inclusive tourism opportunities across the state, especially in the lead-up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Aqua Accessibility is a vital step forward, providing visitors with unique, inclusive experiences and setting new standards for accessible water sports. The program also includes hidden disability-friendly services;, audio guides for the visually impaired and a fully accessible website.
